BLACK PEPPER (Piper nigrum)
Originally from India, black pepper was introduced in Brazil by Japanese immigrants. The national production is basically concentrated in three states: Pará – the largest national producer – Espírito Santo and Bahia. The pepper harvest in Pará is from August to December and in Espírito Santo it is from December to March.
CRAVO (Syzygium aromaticum L.)
Its dry flower bud is used in cooking as a condiment and has been used as a spice since antiquity, being one of the most valuable spices in the country. Brazil is one of the largest producers and exporters of carnation in the world, placing the state of Bahia as the only Brazilian state that produces carnation.
GUARANÁ (Paullinia cupana)
It is widely used as a medicine by the Indians, where the city of Maués was the largest producer of the fruit until it was grown in the southern region of Bahia, making the state the largest national guarana producer. Brazil is the only commercial producer of guarana in the world.
COCOA (Theobroma cacao)
The southern region of Bahia is one of the three largest cocoa producing regions in Brazil as well as the Amazon pole – Pará and Rondônia and Espírito Santo in the southeast of the country. Cocoa has high value and is grown on about 17 million hectares worldwide. According to FAO, Brazil is the 5th largest cocoa producer in the world.
URUCUM (Bixa orellana )
The Urucu or urucum, is the fruit of Urucuzeiro (Bixa orellana) is believed to be native to Brazil. In the beginning it was not used as a food coloring, but had other uses such as body painting (still an important tradition for many
Brazilian tribes), sunscreen and repellent and use
medicinal. It is also known as paprika.
PIAÇAVA (Attalea funifera e Leopoldinia piassaba)
The Piaçava or coconut-piaçaba are the popular names of two species of palm whose fibers are used in the manufacture of brooms and toppings, is native to Bahia and Amazon. Its name originates from the Tupi, meaning “fibrous plant”, due to its characteristic stem.
